New HQ building for Bord Gais

Dublin, Eire

2008

Competition entry ·

The glassy box is established, to the point of tradition in our society, as the default form of the office building. Like the first class plane ticket, the grey suit or a furrowed brow, it has come to signify seriousness and executive status. Though currently prompted by growing external pressures, the continuing re-appraisal of what constitutes good space to work is an inherently valuable exercise. The glass box may have come to be a symbol of office efficiency but is not necessarily the most effective office. In this light studioKAP used this competitive entry as a vehicle to re-examine the office building, exploring the workplace as a less puffed-up and demonstrative building type - something more humane, approachable and thereby in both social and environmental terms more sustainable.
