Clinic for the Sandyford Initiative

Parkhead, Glasgow

£425,000

7 month traditional contract ·

The Sandyford Initiative is a primary health care organisation based in the West End of Glasgow but now expanding to promote sexual health and family planning through a network of new clinics or “Hubs” around Glasgow. studioKAP were commissioned to design the first of these, Sandyford East, built as an extension to Parkhead Health Centre with Greater Glasgow NHS as client. The new clinic infills the open corner of a double-cross existing plan, thereby consolidating the corner of two streets and creating a small, sheltered courtyard between new and old. It can be entered both through the existing centre and independently, via the courtyard. Externally a predominantly timber and galvanised steel façade screens a more private world behind a foil of trees. Resolving social issues of inhibition and discretion alongside clinical effectiveness in a welcoming environment were particularly informative to the architecture of the building.
