Threatened by the impending compulsory purchase of their existing facilities in Glasgow Road to make way for the M74 motorway extension, Rutherglen Glencairn Junior Football Club appointed studioKAP to design replacement facilities on Glasgow Road. In due course we were novated to the D&B contractor on site. New facilities comprised a social Club, football pitch, team changing areas, spectator parking, admission, stand and toilet facilities. The immediate environs of the building gave rise to significant issues of durability with regard to security, vandalism and atmospheric pollution which we were keen to address by the use of high quality, durable materials. Careful internal planning around true, open-air atria and robust but richly detailed brick exteriors provided vigorous solutions in difficult circumstances. A local “graffiti artist” was pre-emptively engaged to create large murals from the Club’s history decorating the social club building which, to date, remains unscathed.
