Gettinby House

Extending and adapting a modest post war developer-built house raises surprisingly challenging architectural issues concerning what new work should look like and how it should relate to the existing internal and external spaces. In this case, a dilapidated side porch was replaced with a lean-to structure of a similar footprint, maximizing the usable space inside by exploiting a gallery section to provide a study/library and a sitting room. Through carefully-crafted design, the essential components of this building are transformed from functional elements into architectural events; the corner window seat, the open tread stair and base, the mezzanine study. This tiny, beautifully-built project both kick started a body of our work examining the nature of dwellings and existing buildings, but also a close working relationship with consulting engineers and a building contractor which continues to the present.
