An unexpected change in level between pavement and private domain creates a surprising walled garden for a modest speculatively-built semi detached residence from the 1920’s. A new addition mediates between front and rear and between interior and the secluded exterior of the walled garden. A single, sociable room for dining and cooking is uniquely placed in the house to enjoy views both to the front and rear gardens. The heavily-insulated timber structure of walls, floor and lead-lined roof provide the support for two cantilevered bays of differing characters facing the front and rear; a rectilinear wood-lined seating bay and a curved shingle-clad wall concealing a new ‘back door’.
