A new painting studio is created above an existing kitchen for an artist with a growing family. The studio is therefore a place of work as well as a retreat away from domestic responsibilities. Two new decks of accommodation are formed for messy and clean activities respectively overlooking a new dining space with a direct link to mature gardens through large sliding glazed screens. Natural light and views out to the surrounding nature are exploited in different ways; bright uninterrupted skylight, soft watery light reflected from the greenery outside, glimpses of trees to the rear as well as long views to distant landscapes; all sources of inspiration for the artist. Materials externally and internally are combined in their natural state producing a non-domestic character conducive to studio working.
