An extension to a semi-detached Victorian gatehouse lodge adjacent to the Mugdock and Craigmaddie reservoirs outside of Milngavie. The existing service wing to the rear is extruded in the same language of stone and slate. Within this a pentagonal room forms a new living space with a wood burning stove, carefully shaped to respond to the extensive views to the north, site boundary and courtyard to the south. A new entrance space in combination with internal re-planning completes the link to the existing house, characterised by long views between the two. Pools of light and shadow from a new lantern roof light intersect these views. These moves allow the extension to form a discrete though nevertheless rich new addition to the house, the site and the place.
