Albany Street Mews
New Town, Edinburgh
2009
Work in progress ·
A new mews building to be constructed on land to the rear of one of our previous residential refurbishment / conversion projects in Albany Street. The challenge of building to a budget while at the same time satisfying the material standards and constraints on massing imposed by the Edinburgh New Town World Heritage Site are significant. Our current proposals are for a small, mixed use building with ground floor parking and office / residential space on two floors above. The site is unusually prominent for a location in the block interior, lying at the crossroads of a typical orthogonal mews lane and the more irregular Albany Lane. The crossroads, already highlighted by the Glasite Church on one corner, is a focal point in the view as one descends northwards across the New Town. This prominence both attracts attention and creates opportunities which we have sought to exploit with this tough little essay in stone and metal, growing organically from the original walls and gables of the bisected grid structure.
