Boathouse Cottage
Balquhidder

A second home for an Edinburgh family in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park just east of Balquhidder. The site is on the northern shore of Loch Voil in mature mixed woodland beneath the Braes of Balquhidder. A much extended turn-of-the-century gillie’s cottage which had outlived its useful purpose was to be replaced by a new building set more deeply into the woods and rock, leaving more open space for garden and outdoor activity. Though decisively contemporary in its massing, the new building nevertheless retains the modest simplicity characteristic of highland housing forms. A limited pallette of richly textured local materials – fieldstone walls, timber windows and green roof - lends a certain intensity to this series of small objects, bedded carefully into the landscape. The planning application for this house was seen as quite significant test case by the newly established Park Authority but after some debate it was given strong support by planning officers as a statement of intent, promoting high quality replenishment of aging building stock within the National Park.
