Outline design proposals - ongoing ·

In 2008 Stirling Developments Ltd invited 12 architectural practices to make an input to overall masterplanning and submit outline design proposals specific to individual neighbourhoods within the proposed new settlement of Calderwood, adjacent the village of East Calder in West Lothian. studioKAP examined the neighbourhood of “Raw Holdings”, an extensive but very low-density buffer zone between the new and existing settlements. We modelled proposals on the existing agricultural structure, traditional riggs of land stretching back from rural lanes. Each rigg would see a micro-settlement of perhaps half-a-dozen dwellings sharing resources of external space and energy in a pattern loosely based on the traditional farm steading. Our proposals took first place in a small internal competition run amongst the contributors. Planning negotiations for the settlement as a whole are ongoing.
