Glenboig Cottage

Fintry, Stirlingshire

2004

£210,000

9 month traditional contract ·

An extended family dwelling combining two households under one roof. An elderly couple had lived on this site for many years in an outdated system designed house incapable of adaptation to their present purposes – requiring comprehensive accessibility. Adult children and grandchildren were to share the site and provide nursing care. Working with the lie of the land a two storey house at the lower end links via shared living spaces at half level with a long single-storey dwelling planned specifically for wheelchair use. The resulting accommocation can operate flexibly as two discrete dwellings or a single, combined house. We develop the simple theme of the traditional long-house in contemporary form. The general orientation and massing of the building respond to the layering of the landscape, rising to culminate in the craggy escarpments of the Campsie Fells, while its sharply cut horizontal lines play against the softer undulating foreground of the surrounding farmland.
