Pier House

Built at the head of the former coal-yard pier in Kames on the Cowal Peninsular this house occupies a slightly unusual position for a traditional coastal village. Very much in the “front row” down on the shore it sits in a relatively public location, more usually the preserve of boat sheds, fishermans cottages and the like. This was a modest building to a tight budget and for this reason also the house we proposed was long and low, with simple, clean lines, few openings to the landward side and a spatially very efficient interior. It is orientated parallel to the shore, its walls extending to link positively with an existing ruined cottage, using this old stone shell to help complete the embrace of a now private site and create sheltered, defensible external space. Careful placement of this simple house was essential to its becoming integral to and taking ownership of a formerly public site.
