Scottish Housing Expo

Inverness

2010

Completed in July 2010 ·

Billed as a search for a new “contemporary Scottish vernacular”, the Highland Housing Fair was developed on the Finnish Housing Expo model, conceived as a showcase for new and sustainable ways forward for rural Scottish housing. Following site acquisition and masterplanning by Caddell2, an architectural competition was launched in 2007, whereby architect-developer teams were invited to submit design proposals for selected plots within the masterplan site. Successful entrants, studioKAP amongst them, were then invited to discuss terms of site purchase and build the houses for exhibition and subsequent sale. studioKAP are responsible together with O’Brien Properties Ltd for a pair of semi-detached dwellings near the entry point to the site. These highly efficient little houses, while engineered to BREEAM excellent rating in collaboration with the Buro Happold Sustainable and Alternative Technologies team, endeavour to remain simple, intuitive and elegant pieces of rural architecture. A strong, and actually very traditional, theme of heavy thermal core within a light insulative envelope underpins the design. Intelligent placement, orientation, fenestration and internal planning are supplemented by careful selections of materials and energy systems to achieve an un-conspicuously green result. The houses will be open for public exhibition throughout August 2010
