A single-family dwelling on the West Coast of Scotland, commanding a fine SW aspect across Loch Melfort to the Isle of Shuna, Croabh Haven and beyond. At its back, the wooded hillside. The site is framed by a small, tree-lined burn and the Shuna pier, cast over a tidal skerry. The location is spectacular but highly exposed. How to place and anchor a small building in a big landscape? A conversation is imagined between house and pier and the house recognises the beach as a place where the natural and the man-made meet – driftwood lodged amongst rocks, concrete venturing into water. Internally at issue is the sense of exposure and shelter, how to provide the latter without anaesthetising the former. Excitement and refuge are provided for as massively thick, creamy walls are played against cool grey windows. Through plan and section an inevitable journey towards the sea continues, passing by shady caves and through sunny volumes.
