18 Stones

Urban Design Proposals with GRAS ·

studioKAP were invited to take part in a competition to design an innovative market stall to help bring the “Stones” street market in Newcastle-Under-Lyme into the 21st Century. This Staffordshire town’s main street is currently divided lengthways into a number of linear zones. studioKAP proposed that these be dissolved to create a single pedestrian surface reaching from one side of the street to the other. The length of the street can then be divided into a series of transverse zones, derived by the urban grain, shop types, façade heights, architectural styles and existing market trends. Each zone is defined by a distinct surface material, and contains a compact storage box which holds all of the markets facilities when out of use.
