Café in George Square

Urban Design Proposals ·
studioKAP was one of six UK practices selected by Glasgow City Council to prepare a second stage design submission for a new café for George Square, one of the city’s major urban spaces. Though the brief stated aspirations to elevate the square to a “Civic Space of International Quality”, it was immediately clear to us that this could not be achieved by the simple introduction of a new café building - however splendid this might be. Our proposals therefore attempted to address wider urban design problems at their root by considering a series of fundamental and inter-related issues: traffic management, re-ordering of statuary, improving the relationship with Queen Street railway station and other parts of the city, new flooring surfaces. Crucially this was about the re-statement of the perimeter of the Square to create places where a café could contribute meaningfully.
