Wed 05 May 2010 · schools
An interesting article in the Daily Telegraph on a couple of recent, successful school projects - Unfortunately, the majority aren't nearly so good, 1 because of the highly contractor-driven procurement routes, pfi, ppp etc which place so much blunt emphasis on costs and 2 because of the sheer pace and volume of it all - simply not the time or resources available (not least among the architects, often commissioned to design half a dozen projects at a time) for thoughtful, discoursive design processes to evolve. Those councils that have succeeded in getting their resources routed into more directly funded, "traditional" procurement routes on a school by school basis (where for example the design team is employed by the client/user rather than the funding contractor) have, all things being equal, tended to produce better end results. BSF has nevertheless achieved a lot of really good new schools, strange that the govt doesn't make more of that achievement in their current election campaign....
