Wed 02 Nov 2011 · public procurement
A timely petition is currently in circulation which aims to draw attention to the excessive beaurocracy that has built up over recent years in the procurement of consultants and contractors, particularly the public sector. We would encourage anyone with an interest in seeing the optimum quality and value in this country's new buildings to take a look at this and, if appropriate, lend it their support. Mon 17 Oct 2011 · windfarms
Revisiting the issues of windfarms we first investigated at Whitelee, just south of Glasgow, together with artist and blogger Alec Finlay at "Skying": These behemoths on our hillsides and moors are so new, so strange, contradictory and ambivalent. They tingle the same nerves that one feels amongst the ancient stones at Calanais, Skarra Brae or Kilmartin. You feel in your guts that they are something different, not just their physical form of course but what they represent in terms of our current place in the world at large. As man-made artefects they are at once an alien presence and at the same time probably some of the most refined and well-tuned interventions since pre-industrial times. Each is at once an incredibly simple idea and a sophisticated quasi-organic form generated by computer modelling, barely distinguishable in its reality from the computer generated imagery that graced the desks of the planning enquiries. They are at once a symbol of hope for future generations but also engender a poignant concern that tinges the green endeavours of our affluent minority in the west. What use a windmill or two in the face of a population steadily rising in its billions?
