An Essay in One Material

An Essay in Stone

The beautiful village of Upper Slaughter (there is an equally memorable neighbouring Lower Slaughter village as well), seems at first to be the perfect chocolate box picture postcard village. Closer inspection reveals the enduring power of one material- stone.

Locally sourced and small in format, stone is used comprehensively in the execution of the buildings and surroundings, developing a tradition over generations of mastering its characteristics and qualities where the eye as well as the hand is needed. The simple art of building or Baukunst as the Germans would call it.
