Heavy and Light

Galicia, in north west Spain is a place built of granite. This hard stone’s stubborn resistance to the fine carving that sandstone permits is more than compensated by the delicacy of the traditional ironwork and timber window assemblies that often form part of the same building.

It is easy to imagine such elements being fabricated in local workshops before being offered to the stony walls and yet they display none of the often mechanical, autonomous quality that prefabricated building elements often display.

Instead, they delight in the virtuosity of those artisans who simply understood their materials and revelled in manipulating them in delightful ways.
