A Small Masterpiece

Manuel Gallego Jorreto designed this house in Corrubedo, Galicia for his extended family 50 years ago and I had the pleasure of visiting it and his family there recently.

Conceived in his own words as ‘a musical instrument’ rather than an architectural monument, it is designed to be adaptable to changing family needs and as a place to enjoy the immediate and the distant landscape.

A two storey mono pitched ‘head’ with living, dining and kitchen connects to a single storey ‘tail’ of bedrooms and bathrooms, all located with great sensitivity adjacent an enclosing stone wall; his first act in defining this very special place.
