Freeman House

Exterior 1 Resized.jpg

This single storey family house is formed of two wings of accomodation. Its site contains some gently sloping marshy ground with a pond, surrounded by an old mill house and some recently built houses. From the site there are views to beautiful, rolling landscape and distant hills. One wing contains the sociable, family spaces in an open vaulted volume and takes advantage of light, views and aspect on three sides. This is where cooking, eating and relaxing take place. The other wing houses private and supporting spaces such as bedrooms and stores. The configuration of the two wings establishes a private, open external courtyard facing the pond. This space was not part of the client’s extensive brief, but it has become the key, defining element of the project, bringing architecture and landscape together to enhance the experience of being together in that place.
